“Quality Starts in Design”

Question: Would you say yes to any of the following:

  • Do we have engineering drawings which do not optimally represent functional design intent?
  • Do we continue to have multiple revisions to engineering drawings which impact all departments and delay time to market?
  • Are we rejecting parts that work or accepting parts that do not work?

If you said yes the any of the above items, is it possible some of these could have been eliminated or at least minimized if the designer had a tool that could significantly improve their confidence in design requirements prior to releasing the drawings? Kotem Technologies has developed a software tool that provides a direct CAD-Bridge for Proofing and Optimization of GD&T syntax. The initial launch of this CAD-Bridge concentrates on utilization with “Evolve Creo-Bridge to Design.”

One of the design challenges is taking a busy part and applying clean syntax throughout the entire drawing without making any mistakes. Having a robust tool available that will interact with the CAD file directly, highlight areas of opportunity to improve and once approved by the designer, make the approved changes automatically back in the CAD file.

The linked video will highlight:

  • Common Errors
  • Standard Violations
  • Warning Messages highlighting possible redundancies
  • Recommendations
  1. Highlight “Errors” due to missing datum references in applicable FCF’s
  2. Highlight “Standard Violations” due to FCF’s referencing considered feature modifiers and datum feature modifiers for non-features of size.
  3. Make visible “Warnings” which will highlight possible redundancies such as multiple controls for the same considered feature.
  4. Offer “Recommendations” related to optimizing syntax due to inconsistent application of datum feature modifiers and applying “form” controls to datum features to ensure consideration and reasonable control of the magnitude of mobility the feature can have in relationship to the datum.

Once you’ve reviewed the video, if you feel this could help improve efficiencies at your company then contact IIGDT to arrange a trial version of the software. Complete the following form. IIGDT EVOLVE Request Info.

Questions to Ask Your Engineering Team?

  • Do we have engineering drawings which do not optimally represent functional design intent?
  • Do we continue to have multiple revisions to engineering drawings which impact all departments and delay time to market and time to invoice?
  • Do we have daily inefficiencies with employees not trained adequately to "optimally" do their job tasks?
  • Do we have ongoing confusion and costly reactions by design, manufacturing and quality due to invalid or questionable measurement results?
  • Do we have challenges in meeting statistical capability expectations (Cpk)?
  • Are we rejecting parts that work or accepting parts that do not work?

Asking the right questions ensures that everyone in the engineering team understands the full implication to the process chain of their actions. Understanding the proper interpretation or intent of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) is not equally shared....
